If you're a pediatric OT weighing whether to make a move, you already know the work. You don't need someone to explain what the job is; you need to know whether the next opportunity is actually a step up, or just a lateral move with a different name on the building.
Here's what's worth paying attention to when you're comparing openings, and a couple of current roles worth a look.
A lot of clinics advertise "flexible hours" without saying much more. What actually matters is whether the flexibility works in your favor. Afternoon and after-school slots (roughly 2:00–7:00 PM) are consistently the hardest for clinics to fill, since that's when most pediatric clients are actually available. That means clinics leaning on this schedule tend to have steadier demand for the therapists willing to work it, and are often willing to build compensation and scheduling around it: think four-day workweeks with longer daily hours in exchange for a three-day weekend, rather than a standard five-day grind.
If a clinic is upfront about needing afternoon coverage, that's not a red flag; it's often a sign they understand their own caseload and are being honest about what the job requires.
Ask where a clinic is in its growth. A newer or recently reopened clinic will likely mean more time per client early on, heavier on evaluations while the caseload builds, before shifting to a faster pace with shorter, more frequent sessions. A more established, steady-paced clinic offers more predictability from day one. Neither is better across the board; it depends on whether you want room to ease into a caseload or prefer a clinic that's already found its rhythm.
Base pay matters, but so does everything sitting next to it. Health insurance stipends, CEU reimbursement, per-evaluation pay, and referral bonuses can add up to a meaningfully better total package than a slightly higher base salary alone. It's worth asking what a clinic offers beyond the number in the job title.
If you have experience with feeding therapy, or you're bilingual in English and Spanish, don't undersell it. These are consistently in-demand skills in pediatric settings, and clinics that serve diverse communities or see a high volume of feeding referrals will often prioritize candidates who bring that experience to the table.
If you're newer to the field, pediatric settings are often more open to on-the-job growth than people expect. Clinics that are actively building their caseload tend to offer exactly the kind of runway new grads benefit from: more time per evaluation, less pressure to hit a full caseload on day one, and room to develop your clinical instincts before things speed up.
